orthorexiaYou have probably heard about anorexia, bulimia, and the binge eating disorder by now. How about an eating disorder called orthorexia?

Orthorexia is a real eating disorder marked by an obsession with healthy eating. People afflicted with it stick to a very strict healthy eating regimen and may avoid food that contain artificial colors, flavors, preservatives, saturated fats, and trans fats at all costs. This may often jeopardize their social life and daily living.

Often, no matter how hungry these people get, they will deny themselves food to avoid eating items that they label as being unhealthy.

Treatment with cognitive behavioral therapy has been shown to help. If you or anyone you know experiences symptoms of orthorexia, please seek professional help.

Overall, diet is really about BALANCE. There are no “good” or “bad” foods. Having lost a lot of weight and having reduced my cholesterol from a total of 179 to 123, I can say that cake is a regular part of any celebration in our household. I do eat healthy 90% of the time, but there is nothing like a good glass of wine with some really good cheese enjoyed in a warm company of friends.

During this holiday season, remember to exercise, take care of your emotional needs, and stay healthy. Enjoy small indulgences in moderation and keep your life in balance. E-mail me at maria@topbalancenutrition.com with your comments, questions, or concerns.
